As many of this community are aware, Tristar's 1998 GODZILLA brought with it an uproar of outrage from the Godzilla community, as well as a new monster and spawning a series, dubbed GODZILLA: The Series.
The new monster in question has since been dubbed Zilla by Toho, after GINO and, apparently, Tuna-Head. Zilla stood on lonely ground. Fans and Toho employees alike berated Zilla with dislike. One person even said, "It's not Godzilla. It doesn't have his spirit." and even someone has stated that Tristar "took the god out of Godzilla."
All was not lost, however, as Zilla Jr. took over for his father, boasting the true spirit of Godzilla, and even a green version of his classic ability in GODZILLA: The Series. While the show itself was a moderate success for the character, the light in with Jr. shown darkened quickly, and he too, fell into obscurity.
Zilla, last appeared before audiences in Final Wars, only to be smitten by Godzilla in, quite litterally, an ol' 1, 2 manner. It has since resurfaced in the Rulers of the Earth comic series, and has proven itself to be a worthy foe to Godzilla himself.
Since this appearance, Zilla has gained more favor than ever before!
This leaves one question:
Does Zilla [and/or Zilla Jr.] deserve RESPECT or TOLERANCE?
Please, share with me your opinions.
-MY OPINION-
I feel Zilla and Zilla Jr. deserve respect. They have set themselves in stone as great kaiju in their own rights, and Zilla itself has even proven, though only in a comic, that he can stand up to Godzilla, if only for a short while, whereas Zilla Jr. held up to his title of Godzilla with all of his fictional might.
P.S. Greetings, I am new here. I am a huge fan of Godzilla and Zilla as well (as Zilla introduced me to the Big G). I would love it if someone would give me a tour via PM and show me just where everything goes.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-29-2014 6:46 PMI think it deserves to be treated the way it is now, since we have a new film thats more respectful to the source material.
and to be very honest I never had such hatred on it as much as other fans did.

Thanks for the warning!!

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-29-2014 7:00 PMZilla is the thing I have an unmatched hate for. It is really ugly, weak, and just horrible. I don't want to be rude, but I am getting kind of sick of all of the nonstop Zilla topics lately. There has been a massive uproar of repeat topics of Zilla getting unneeded hate everything.
FOR SCIENCE OF COURSE!

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-29-2014 7:06 PM@CoolGodzilla- While I respect your opinion, I ask this; why are you wasting your time and mine by posting a comment that does not acknowledge why this post is here?
Please, while not everyone likes the iguana, there are some of us that do, and some of us who wouldn't even know who Godzilla is if it weren't for the ugly, weak, horrible creature. I, for one, am one of the aforementioned people.

MemberBaragonMar-29-2014 7:11 PMI respect your opinion, Devianteist, but your logic is faulty. You would not even know Godzilla without the '98 version? That's rather sad.

Also, thank you for jumping on GodzillaTheKing for me. Couldn't think of anything to say. xD

Either way it goes, thanks. No one deserves a snip here. We just need opinions that don't attack anyone.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-29-2014 7:35 PMI have respect for Zilla Jr. but I have none for Zilla. A large amount of the people I know make fun of Godzilla and say it is crap because of Zilla. I think of Zilla as undeserving for simpathy or respect but Zilla Jr. does . I respect your opinion. When I was a little kid, I had a DVD of the cartoon series with Zilla Jr. and I thought it was awesome! Zilla Jr. deserves to be more known to everyone.
FOR SCIENCE OF COURSE!

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-29-2014 7:47 PM@CoolGodzilla1234- Now that is an opinion I find much more agreeable. In fact, I find that I can only disagree with the indiscriminate hate on Zilla. Then again, that's not important.

Godzillatheking123
MemberBaragonMar-29-2014 7:51 PMThe cartoon series was definitely better than the actual movie which it was based on. Granted, I wasn't crazy about the cartoon and Zilla Jr, but at least it was watchable, compared to the crapfest that was '98.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-29-2014 8:02 PMMy take on the Zilla dialog is simply that as a creature design it has some merit and tried to follow some interesting choices for its biology and how it acts/thinks. But Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin are not patient people and they are well known for not being able to handle material that is based on other media or established source material.
My issue with Zilla was the fact that Emmerich himself never liked the original Godzilla and the script he and Devlin wrote reflected that. Much of the 'character' of Godzilla was buried beneath chase scenes that work on Fast and Furious movies but a Giant Monster doesn't do chase scenes and he most definitely doesn't run from the army. Even the worst of the kaiju films don't have your monster playing like its a 300' version of Arnold in Commando, running and hitting the people from out of nowhere. The obvious problem of him missing his classic atomic breath could have been overlooked had they decided to make a good film that made enough money to warrant a sequel and then introduce his blue ray o' death there and all would have been forgiven then for the most part.
Edwards seems to have avoided the pitfalls of the Emmerich/Devlin version and is using the history and character of Toho's most famous product to build a film upon and not dismissing it entirely. Zilla needs to be classified as less of a Godzilla and more of a Godzillasaurus that should have been given more time in the evolutionary Eazy Bake Oven™ to develop more and make him the Godzilla that we shouldn't have waited 16 years to see done properly here.
Zilla does deserve a measure of respect but only because others tried to clean up what Emmerich and Devlin messed up.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-29-2014 8:24 PMI believe that zilla and it's progeny are important to the hiatory of the franchise, as it was an attempt to bring Godzilla to a wider audience, and despite whqt many may say about the quality of the movie it can't be denied that a generation was introduced to Godzilla through this and came to love an appreciate the original character. I knew about the classic Godzilla before seeing the movie when I was younf and want bothered by the film at all, though in my later years I can see why some take issue with it.
back to the issue at hand, yes Zilla may have been a huge letown but there is no denying it happened and without the missteps taken we probably wouldnt have the film we are anticipating now. Those who love the character respect him and those who dislike the character should tolerate the fact that zilla and his son have a loving community just as he classic G doeA. Godzilla isn't better than zilla and vice verse, they are part of the kaiju culture just the same. While I agree some zilla fans need to show more respect to the original godzilla, I hope it isn't too much to ask for g-fans to tolerate the fans of zilla without berating or being condescending to them.
thsnk you for reading if you did.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-29-2014 8:35 PM@Brojoe- Is there a reason you think this that isn't "Zilla sucks?" Also, why no mention of Jr.?
@Lacreoleman- You drive a fine point. It's surprising that so many well mannered people are gathered within this community [because, y'know, it's the internet].
@GojiJonesy91- You hold firm ground with Lacreoleman, and I like it. Also, of course I will read the replies. I made this thread so that I could figure out who's who on this site. So far, I've found mostly pleasant individuals such as yourself.
So far, I'm actually surprised this many people [though relatively few] have taken time out of their days/nights/lives to bother reading this. I really appreciate.

Zilla, to me, is an awesome monster. Just like you, Zilla is the one who introduced me to the original Godzilla. When I was very, very young, I was a HUGE Zilla fan and I didn't know hardly anything about Godzilla. I know that no one will want to hear this, but originally, Zilla WAS Godzilla to me. I know much better than that now, that they're both their own monsters. Even though I kind of like to view Zilla the way Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin meant for people to view him- as a DIFFERENT VERSION of Godzilla.
You see, people hate him so much because they say he isn't anything LIKE Godzilla. But I find it interesting to think about, really. I know everyone wanted a movie true to the original (and they will get that come May 16th), and I understand why everyone was disappointed, but I find it interesting to see a version of Godzilla so.... different. It's like taking Godzilla and making a monster that is the opposite of him. To me it's an interesting twist, and honestly, it makes a cool monster, in my opinion, just seeing how different he and Godzilla are. I like viewing Zilla as a SECOND version of Godzilla. Not THE Godzilla, the TRUE King of the Monsters, but a DIFFERENT VERSION of him.
I guess that's why calling him Godzilla never bothered me too much. I fully agree with calling him Zilla, because that way you know that they are two different monsters. Obviously, they are in no way the same. But since I always looked at Zilla as being a second version, it never bothered me.
So as I said, I grew up with Zilla, and he was Godzilla to me until he managed to introduce me to the actual King of the Monsters. So he will always be a favorite monster of mine, and I will continue to believe that he is owed respect as being his own amazing, unique monster. This stands for both Zilla from the movie and Zilla Jr.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-29-2014 9:57 PMZilla is the one who introduced me to the Godzilla franchise, and to me, he does deserve respect. Heck, i think he is already having respect due to Rulers of Earth! I hope that he comes back, but this time, teaming up with Godzilla instead of fighting each other. Who's with me? =3

TOTALLY with you! Teaming up with Godzilla? Man, that would rock!!! Honestly, that's what I've wanted to see for years. I always thought seeing the two pair up would be not only awesome, but it might actually get Zilla a lot more respect if he was by Godzilla's side.
