As much as I would love to see Monsterverse expand and grow. I don't think we will see a Monsterverse after 2020.

I could go into a thousand reasons why it wont last, but that's not the discussion here. However to get this topic going here is what I would like to see in this fictional line up.

If Rodan and Mothra become solo movies, I would like to see them based in the past. Like thousand years past when they would have reigned. Since G:KOTM gives a back story of these monsters already, it would be great to show something in the past already, like something we didn't know from KOTM. Like Rodan ravaging a island tribe or something like that.

Kong Returns - Im not sure Kong fighting Ebirah would sell tickets. I like that you implied it tho. I get it, that was the original story to Ebirah, Horror of the Deep. Not sure if Kong would still be vital after 2020. Even though its far fetched, the only direction that would keep Kong new and fresh would to have Kong fight aliens! That might spark some interest. I know it seems ridiculous.

Godzilla 3 I can see keeping it all alive. It depends on how GVK goes.

Monster Island could be great, I would love to see anything in that.

King Kong - like I said. Aliens.

Varan, not sure how to stir this pot.

All the rest I would pay tickets to in your Phase 3.

I can definitely see your points with the monsterverse not continuing. I just really hope it does. I am pretty sure Godzilla vs Kong will do great at the box office, because it’s freaking Godzilla vs freaking King Kong. If they just promote it good. I hope that we will at least get a Kong 2 and Godzilla 3.

ebirah is a really popular candidate amongst fans for Kong 2 and I wanted to save gorosaures for Kong 3. The other candidate I had for kong 2 was biolante, but she is way to popular of a Godzilla monster to feature in a Kong movie.

varan was kinda a space filler for phase 3 and I couldn’t think of a other movie that would have made sense in that spot, so I can definitely agree on that.

for the rest it’s great to see you like the rest. I might change it up a little in the future and give it another shot.

if you have any other ideas or changes you would make to this list I would love to hear it.

"I am pretty sure Godzilla vs Kong will do great at the box office, because it’s freaking Godzilla vs freaking King Kong."

It's not just the box office though. The agreement between Legendary and Toho ends in 2020, according to Shinji Higuchi. Whether or not that merely means the particular slate of movies or if Legendary completely loses the rights, is unclear. However, it's likely Legendary will have to renegotiate the rights with Toho if they want to make more--And I know Toho wants to make their own for a change, so we'll see.

^ That's what a lot of people seem to overlook. They assume that box office success alone will determine if the MonsterVerse extends past Godzilla vs. Kong. While box office revenue is important for the future of these films, like G-Man said the contract between Toho and Legendary, which also prevents Toho from producing their own live-action Godzilla films, ends in 2020. Everything beyond that is still uncertain. I don't think Toho has any intention of letting their ability to make more films be restricted after that point, so if Legendary did deem it necessary to renegotiate the rights, that stipulation would probably have to be removed. Regardless I think it will be tough for Legendary to extend their rights and Toho will be asking a lot, so it's a question of whether or not Legendary thinks it's worth it.

The point is, there are a lot of factors beyond just box office revenue that could determine whether or not Legendary will be able to use Godzilla after 2020. Legendary would also need to acquire the rights to all the other classic Toho kaiju beyond Godzilla and the big three, which would all likely come at a hefty price with their own set of stipulations. Legendary might not see it worthwhile to purchase the rights to all of these monsters, most of which general audiences are completely unaware of, when they could just as easily create their own.

I always felt Toho and Legendary could potentially work it out where they take turns putting out movies, but that would severely restrict the release window for both studios. It would be like rushing to the finish line for both Hollywood and Japanese produced films.

I can see your points, box office won’t be good enough to save the monsterverse. But the contract with toho can always be extended. You have to remember that toho earns money from these movies too.

I feel like these first 4 movies are kinda a test for the monsterverse. if people want to see more of the monsterverse. Kinda like they did with marvel until the avengers. Until that point the movies where tests for the MCU. I think they are trying to do the same.

If toho and legendary agree with each other that the monsterverse is earning enough money and get reasonable reviews or better, They can always extend their contract for a few more movies.

and before anyone is gonna say that they said that toho can’t produce any live action Godzilla movies before 2020, that can also be easily explained. The first monsterverse movie was Godzilla in 2014, then toho made shin Godzilla in 2016. You see how they don’t want to get in each other’s way. if they would make a shin Godzilla 2, there movie might overshadow king of the monsters and the other way around. When 2020 is over, toho can make shin Godzilla 2 and in 2023 legendary can make Godzilla 3 if they want to.

I hope the franchise continues in The Monsterverse. But I agree with the fact that Lengendary can make monsters cheaper in their own production. So if there is more, they probably wont add more Toho monsters. Maybe Mechagodzilla, or classic monsters from the showa series. I doubt any "newer" monsters from the Heisei or Millennium series will make an appearance like Spacegodzilla, Biollante or Orga.

It's not a matter of Toho and Legendary not wanting to get in each others' way, it's the fact that their contract specifically prohibits the studios from each having a live-action Godzilla film in production at the same time. I'm sure Toho wasn't too upset with that arrangement at the time, considering they hadn't produced a new Godzilla film since 2004, which had itself been a box office failure, but now I think things have changed. Shin Godzilla was a huge success, and Toho may believe they could see more profit by producing their own live-action films regularly than they would by distributing Legendary's films. Shinji Higuchi even said that if they knew Legendary's Godzilla sequel would be delayed into 2019, they still would be working on Shin Godzilla. The fact we are seeing the production of the anime trilogy right now is likely Toho exercising a loophole in the contract so they could capitalize on the sudden resurgence in Godzilla's marketability.

If Legendary were to try and extend their ability to use Godzilla, Toho would either put up a much higher asking price or require the stipulation regarding subsequent production of films to be removed. No such stipulation existed during Toho's contract with TriStar as far as I've gathered, though TriStar ended up not producing any more films anyway. I think Toho wants to resume producing their own live-action Godzilla films, and will be willing to cease earning revenue from Legendary's films to do so. Time will tell how this plays out, but as it stands I don't think the arrangement will continue the way it is now.

Personally, I'm hoping that negotiations will have been made by the time Godzilla VS. Kong comes out so that the Monsterverse as it is can continue unhindered.

Maybe allow animation to be the major Japanese avenue of Godzilla films as a sort of compromise. Failing that, perhaps Legendary themselves could "cheat the system" so to speak, by doing animation themselves. More specifically, licensing out to animation companies to produce photorealistic all-CGI films. Thus, not "technically" live-action but looking just as good if not better.

It'd also allow future films to not have the CGI stand out from the live-action filmed scenes if it's all photorealistic CGI. Think like the work that modern Blur Studios does for videogames, but for film instead.

I imagine Legendary is well aware of how difficult it could be to extend its rights to Godzilla, so it is either planning ahead to renew them already or has already accepted the fact it is going to lose them after 2020. I'm leaning towards the latter, and if that is the case I expect Godzilla vs. Kong is being planned as a capstone and grand finale to the MonsterVerse. Legendary isn't going to use Godzilla vs. Kong primarily as a building block for future films and plan far ahead if there's a good chance they won't have access to Godzilla after 2020.

well even if they cant use Godzilla after 2020 in the monsterverse, then perhaps they can try to make a rodan or mothra film. They only need the rights to those 2 monsters. Hell, maybe even a Gamera movie! I would like to see that in the monsterverse. I know im stretching. But why start a movie universe if your only going to have 4 major films?

Judging by the fact they're getting all the big monsters done I think points to an end of the monsterverse after Godzilla vs Kong. I think we'll have to see how they deal with the monsters in 2019, but if say all of them die except Godzilla in that movie to me that's a big tell that they don't plan to go on.

After these 4 movies they'll have used Godzilla, Kong, Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan basically the biggest and most marketable giant monsters possible. I don't see them wanting any other toho monsters especially with the big price tag that probably comes with them even if they continue the monsterverse besides maybe MechaG and a baby.

I'm more interested in what Toho will do these days than I am the MonsterVerse, so I can live with it ending at GvK. However, if more do get made, I hope there's a massive change in the agreement so both studios can go about their productions in their desired time frame.

I can't imagine Toho would let the MonsterVerse go on while still letting the agreement dictate they can't produce their own live-action films in the same time frame. I'm sure that part of the contract would have to be renegotiated.

@riggzamortis If Legendary lost the rights to Godzilla, they in all likelihood wouldn't be able to use Mothra, Rodan or King Ghidorah either. Their rights to the entire franchise will have lapsed. Toho sells the rights to their monsters separately, but a company needs to acquire the license to Godzilla first before they can purchase any of the other monsters. If Legendary wanted to continue the MonsterVerse without Godzilla, I suppose they could keep using Kong, but I have to think there was some kind of under-the-table agreement between Legendary and Universal allowing Kong to be used in the MonsterVerse.

Another issue is the fact that Legendary's current distribution deal is with Universal, while the MonsterVerse is a collaboration between Legendary and Warner Bros. simply out of necessity. WB has the rights to Godzilla and Universal does not, so Legendary needs to keep the films with them. I see the MonsterVerse as a temporary arrangement between the studios that was only intended to last long enough to complete the contract the studios signed with Toho. If Legendary does renegotiate with Toho, I could foresee Universal taking Warner Bros.' place in the arrangement potentially.

While I do think the Monsterverse does have potential, I'm sure not sure about pretty much - The Entire of Phase 2, and Varan. I really don't think you could find stories that are worthwhile for solo Rodan, Mothra and Varan movies, and I doubt they would bring in big box office profits. Personally, I don't see how you could have another 2 Kong movies, another 2 Godzilla movies, and pretty much 2 Major "Crossover" films such as Monster Island. If you look at the MCU movies, going for 2-3 solo movies can be a risk.

Iron Man 2 nearly bombed, The Winter Soldier was good, but where were the other Avengers? Thor: The Dark World also nearly bombed. Iron Man 3 was really a risk, and Civil War was basically Avengers 3.

So TBH, I don't really see having 2 Kong and 2 Godzilla sequels worth making, because unless Godzilla 3 and Kong Returns are like prequel films, it would be hard to make more of them without the same generic formula being used everytime (New kaiju, Earth has to be defended). I'd pretty much have Phase 3 (besides Varan) simply be Phase 2.

Remember that chap, I forget his name, he climbed Everest without any oxygen, came down nearly dead. They asked him, they said, "Why did you go up there to die?" He said, "I didn't, I went up there to live."

^even though I mostly agree with what was said. I think there is plenty of room for another Godzilla film at least. We know Godzilla has no interest in what mankind has been doing for thousands of years. So far we see Godzilla as a hero, a monster that can fight other monsters. In Godzilla 2014 we see Godzilla the hero fighting off the male and female MUTO's and saving the world. So far in G:KOTM I see a similar role for all 3 monsters. Godzilla will still be a hero by days end I think. GvK? This role comes down to who wins and is seen as the bigger hero. Perhaps Godzilla is outnumbered with both Kong and Human intervention. Whether it be the Oxygen Destroyer or some kind of super weapon to combat Godzilla, he might see us as the next threat. Changing his role from hero to villain.

The 4th Godzilla movie could change Godzilla's whole dynamic. "Godzilla 3" could show signs of Godzilla on the attack and we humans must find a way to stop him. That could be "Godzilla 3" worth making. Godzilla's complete character arch from hero to villian. I could see 2 more Godzilla films around that.

As for Kong, I totally agree. If I was in charge Kong should fight aliens. Just saying. He hasn't fought aliens as of yet. He fought dinosaurs, Godzilla, a giant robot of himself, snakes, octopus's, Skull Crawlers, his son fought a bear, humans in planse or helicopters or trains. Yup, aliens sounds fun. Advanced beings vs. Primal God?Sounds great to me.
