Having become sick of the monster vs. monster debates I whipped this up while out of town and decided to pitch it at you guys. This debate will pit movie against movie.

Additionally, I'm keeping all the debates in this thread alone and will update as I go along. I found a list randomizer and mostly used it to pit movie against movie with a bracket system in mind, so the choices are fair. Here's the image:

I'll go with 'Return of Godzilla'. I loved Godzilla's new look after the Showa Era. And it has one of the most memorable endings in the Godzilla series. Both the Japanese and American versions. The score that plays is one of my favorite from the franchise. And Raymond Burr's speech really gives me goosebumps, even to this day.

GMAN2887 - What an extremely fun and innovative idea! Hmm...I will have to go with Return of Godzilla. I rememebr watching it for the first time when I was little and having to hide my eyes during certain parts - it scared me awfully! As such, it has remained etched in my mind throughout the years! :)

Hmm Return of Godzilla has a better story but the characters are pretty boring and forgettable. Then again the people from Godzilla x Mechagodzilla were anything special either.

I guess I'll go with Return of Godzilla even with the characters the story was a new but similar take on Godzilla and some of the effects and cinematography were amazing.

While I really like both films, I guess I'll have to go with Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. Both movies are good, but GxMG has the advantage because in my opinion it features more interesting characters, more exciting monster action, a slightly more engaging story, a slightly better musical score, and better special effects even for its respective time.

Honestly, GxMG is just too Power Rangers-esque to me. Not quite as bad as Final Wars, but almost there. It's obvious that the budgets have been reduced and stretched as thin as can be. Both Godzilla and MG look their worst. Not to mention how it's filmed is very amateurish. Flat, static shots which don't even give the illusion that these are two titanic creatures, but rather simply, yes, men in suits tromping through a cardboard city. The Return of Godzilla is simply the superior film in most every regard. Scope, design, story, and even characters.

GXM for me. One of my favorite Millennium films, and in general. I find it very entertaining. I love Kiryu's rampage after he sees G roar for the first time, and the scene of him/it finally running out of power is an iconic one for me. Love the music during that whole sequence as well.

Although I do like RoG, it's supposed to be a direct sequel to '54 but doesn't have any of its majesty. There's something missing. I loved the body design but the head/face were a complete miss, with the goofy plastic doll eyes that clicked open and closed and I didn't like the teeth. Toho did a great job re-designing his head and face for Biollante. It does, however have one of my favorite scenes in any G-film. A battalion is blasting G from a pier and he just rears back and blows the battalion away with one long burst of his breath. Fabulous; one of those scenes that stays with you.

i love both films but i have to go with godzilla against mechagodzilla because it is just a great film and it has my favorite version of my favorite godzilla enemy KIRYU

Return of Godzilla all the way. The first of the Heisei era, an incredible Godzilla that would go on to become the 89 Godzilla who battled Biollante, and i may be wrong but, became the Godzilla that would go on to battle King Ghidorah, Super MechaGodzilla & Rodan, Mothra & Battra, and Destoroyah.

The film was great, but it's the legacy that is what makes it iconic.

Good grief.

Id have to go with GXMG, the style of the movie and its sequel combine elements of both heisei and showa series in way that works really good in this concept, the suits aside from being tne most expensive out of all the godzilla suits are some of the best desgins in kaiju cinema, the godzilla is a good balance between millenium goji and the classic godzilla suits and not to mention kiryu, kiryu has a very good design, concept, plotline and is probably the best version of MG

Evacuate?, Godzilla is just a Legend!-Woman in GMK

MemberBaragonJun-06-2015 5:46 PM

The Kiryugoji design was one of the most expensive suits, but I haven't seen anything that specifically states that it is the number one. I mean by god, besides looking pretty stiff the thing couldn't even turn it's head.

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaJun-06-2015 5:49 PM

^Actually it could-- Not extensively like the GMK suit or the 94/95 suit, but it did have a motor that allowed it some rotation.

I've never heard it was one of the more expensive suits. If true that's ridiculous. All they did was reuse the 99/00 mold, give it a different paint job and stick a new head/spines on it.

According to the wiki it's "among the most expensive suits" although you have to take that with a grain of salt looking at the site and the way it gets its info. It also gives no context meaing it could be top 5 or just in the upper half of suits all the way down to 15. I'd be extremely surprised if it was in the top 5, I'd probably say in relation to the time it was made it wouldn't be that much more expensive than the 84 suit which did a lot for it's time.

"According to the wiki"

Grain of salt taken with the entire shaker.

I'm voting The Return of Godzilla, one of my all-time favorites. There's a lot of great stuff in there including the first full reveal of Godzilla. It is during the ominous approach toward the nuclear plant when you hear the thunderous footsteps, the security officer looks up and there stands Godzilla who obviously isn't aware of the human and doesn't care. Also loved a scene where Godzilla spits out what seems like a short burst of his atomic ray and destroys this helicopter that is flying around and apparently annoying him. The copter drops ands sets off a series of explosions. Enjoyed the tone and direction of this film.

The wiki says it's among one of the most "expressive" suits, not "expensive" suits.

The Kiryugoji design is actually one of my favorites. Like GMan said, they basically re-purposed the 99/00 design, but improved on it vastly, imho. I like the head/face design and the eyes. The spines, although modeled after 99/00, were toned down in size and painted differently. The pinkish/fuschia/purple color of the 99/00 fins was ghastly, and I found them too large. All in all, I really like the look.

I do agree with Durp004 that it is a fairly stiff suit, though.

Durp004

MemberBaragonJun-06-2015 6:55 PM

Hm it does say expressive, after JRR said it was the most expensive suit I googled and skimmed the article to see if there was any comfirmation, should have read it more carefully.

Sadly when I typed Kiryugoji, the wiki was one of the few things that popped up that actually had some information on the rest were just pictures, or basically emcompassed the same information.

MOVIE TOURNAMENT ROUND 2 HAS BEGUN.

Pooled from twitter and the forum, The Return of Godzilla won against Godzilla x MechaGodzilla, 10 to 5.

Next round:

Godzilla: Final Wars VS. Godzilla x Megaguirus

The King of the Monsters

Well, this round is interesting. Godzilla vs. Megaguirus is a film that is almost universally looked down upon by the fanbase, while Final Wars is in my opinion the most divisive film, and fans either seem to rank it as their favorite or the absolute worst in the series. I personally tolerate both films, and have no extremely strong feelings for either film one way or the other.

But I'd have to go with Final WarsGxM is just sort of mediocre to me, and I'd rank it among my least favorite entires in the series just because it's really nothing special or innovative, aside from Masaaki Tezuka's first crack at the franchise as a director. Final Wars, on the other hand, is certainly memorable, for better or worse. I personally like the film, though I definitely wouldn't call it one of my favorites, and I'm always entertained by it. I tend not to look at it as a traditional film, more of as a tribute to the series done in the style of an action-comedy. It's extremely fun to watch for me, because when there aren't ridculously over-the-top monster fights going on, there's ridicuously over-the-top human fights, space battles, and acting going on. I also give Final Wars points for featuring tons of Easter eggs and references to other Toho films, plus bringing back tons of actors from all three eras. Not to mention the excellent fan service provided by the Godzilla vs. Zilla battle.

Final Wars all the way on this one.

Both are terrible films. Godzilla X Megaguiras is the more traditional kaiju film, but it's entirely forgettable and dull. Final Wars is awful in that it displays the worst suits of the entire franchise and goes right into into Power Rangers cheese territory. Out of the two, I'll go with Final Wars in that it's at least balls on crazy and memorable.

Gonna go with Godzilla vs. Megaguirus. The special effects were fairly better and the monster fights were fun. The swarm attack was great but not the best. Both films were considerable the worst of the millennium series. However, final wars is a cheap knockoff of destroy all monsters and destroy all monsters was and still is better than the both of these films.

Glad that the return of Godzilla won though.

I'll go with Final Wars. Did not enjoy the cheesiness including the actor who channelled Sgt. Slaughter (sorry, cannot think of the actor's name at the moment). But I did enjoy seeing updated versions of several of the monsters missing in action up until that point including Anguirus, King Seasar, and Gigan. The humor though unintentional was okay.

G x MG had an excellent score and some creative ideas such as the Dimension Tide and the scene where the protaganist is literally riding on top of Godzilla's back as he's rising out of the ocean. There was something missing though with the direction and writing.

Wow well any fans of Return of Godzilla got good news. Their movies is most likely going to the quarter finals of the bracket since I doubt either of these will beat it.

This is basically the best of the worst, or at least some of them. I'm gonna go with Final Wars because as bad as it was it was at least entertaining, whereas Godzilla vs Megaguirus was pretty boring, with only two or three scenes that really stand out.

KoldWarKid62

MemberBaragonJun-08-2015 8:14 AM

Admittedly GXMegaguirus is one of the weaker Millennium films, but I'm probably one of the few fans here who doesn't hate the movie! I actually like it.

And judging from the tide and popular vote so far, I think I will be in the minority by a long shot in that category as well.

I get the whole "it's so bad it's good", or "it's so over the top it's entertaining" thing about GFW, but it's just a movie that is hard for me to get through. I find it such a jumbled mess with it's X-Men meets Matrix meets DAM  and we'll throw in the kitchen sink sensibility. I think the monster designs are mediocre, with the G design being one of my least favorite ever. Just all in all not one of my favorite movies in the series, and it's a shame the series had to go out (on it's 50th anniv) with this mess of a movie.

Anyway, I know I'll be grossly out-voted, but so be it.

Koldwar,
To be fair I'm including twitter votes as well, so you never know. Makes things more interesting.

Koldwarkid I can agree with most of the things you say about Final Wars(with the exception of the godzilla suit while not being my favorite I didn't find it all that bad). Against almost any other Godzilla movie I too feel it's appropriate that a movie like it go out in the first round. The only problem is Godzilla vs Megaguirus is pretty much is the same boat.

The design was the Miregoji from the movie beforehand so I can't really give it credit for a good design, and Megaguirus was pretty bad. The actual prop was so stiff basically being on the same level at the Mothra puppets from the 90s and I think we all know the scene were you can see literally every single string attached when she first appears. The design itself is pretty counteractive while it looks menacing the whole schtick for Megaguirus is supposed to be how fast the monster is and just looking at the design there's nothing that really points that out. It looks more like a flying brawler than some superspeed monster. So while it's true Final Wars did give us the awful experience of seeing Keizer Ghidorah, and its version of Minilla, it also had a lot more monsters it had to work on than Godzilla vs Meguirus so I can forgive it if a few don't look that great.

In terms of story I think the're pretty even, Godzilla vs Megaguirus might have a slightly more coherent story, but not by much. The characters are similar too with the exception of the ones in Final Wars filling their screentime with fighting while the one from GxM just being bad. I mean the whole revenge plot for the main pilot is pretty halfbaked. The plot was done better later on in Godzilla against Mechagoodzilla, but in this one at no point ever did I sympathize with the girl and her revenge for Godzilla due to something she was fully reponsible for. The guy who's name I also can't remember doesn't really do much until the very end when he fixes the DT.

Overall I think both these movies should go out in the first round and I'm sure it's going to kill me later on when two good movies get matched up and one goes out in round one while one of these two gets a free pass on the ground of being the better worse movie. It comes down to whether you want a slightly better story or more action really.

I hope you're not planning on including the original film in this debate, because I can already tell you what will win this tournament if it is.
