Which is the worse of them all: Son of Godzilla, All Monsters Attack, Godzilla vs Hedorah or Megalon?

Now as a G-fan, I love all Godzilla movies, even the bad ones. But speaking of the bad ones, I'm not so fanboyish as to ignore the fact that some Godzilla entries really weren't that great. In fact I dare say some were downright awful. The worst Godzilla flicks I could narrow down to the following:

(P.S-Even when I say they are the worst, I still like them, but I'm not going to defend them when someone say these flicks stink).

Son of Godzilla: Ugh. The film that introduces Godzilla's kid, Minilla. Its highly debatable whether this flick deserved to be included in the "worst" list since there are quite a number of fans to this. And the scene at the end was kinda touching (as rubber suited monsters go anyway). But as a monster design, Minilla just seem plain stupid.

Godzilla's Revenge/All Monsters Attack: I didn't like this flick since Godzilla here wasn't even real but a figment of this annoying kid's imagination. And having Minilla talk to him? Ugh.

Godzilla vs Hedorah: I know Edwards said he "liked" this film, but that was more in a tongue-in-cheek manner. As this film was just plain weird. It made little sense to me.  And Godzilla flies using his atomic breath as a form of rocket propulsion?! Yeah, its hilarious but it didn't do much for Godzilla's reputation.

Godzilla vs Megalon: This flick was simply retarded. I'm not afraid to say this is probably the worst of all the Godzilla films. Jet Jaguar is a plain rip-off of Ultraman. And the whole film in fact just seem like a cut-rate Ultraman episode with Godzilla thrown in (I like Ultraman by the way, but I just didn't think its a good idea for the Godzilla producers to rip off him here).

So, which of the above flicks do you think is the worst of the Godzilla films? Or maybe another one not included here?

I have to disagree with a few of those.

First off, NONE of them are half as bad as Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, which I don't understand why that gets a pass. vs. SpaceGodzilla is without a doubt, tonally, atmospherically and visually the most inconsistant, poorly written Godzilla movie of the series.

Son of Godzilla is actually a fantastic movie. Yeah, the Godzilla suit is fairly putrid. And fans don't like Minya. But the story and effects were great and a definite breath of fresh air from the more militaristic and "world ending" movies that Honda did from 1964/65. It's a great film for families. Just because it is a family film doesn't make it bad.

Godzilla vs. Hedorah... the fanbase isn't going to ever agree on this one. I think it's a good movie and that the reason it's well made is because it stands out as fairly weird. It's something of an arthouse Godzilla movie. It contrasts the "kiddie" moments in an ironic fashion with the dark tones.

Godzilla vs. Megalon is pretty horrid. Agreed there. On your list it's easily the worst. But it's still a better movie than vs. SpaceGodzilla since it atleast has a consistant screenplay and some characters that make damn sense.

Godzilla's Revenge is underrated and misunderstood. I wrote an article that adequettely frames my opinion of the movie here: Revenge for Godzilla's Revenge

But Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla takes the cake for me. Hands down. And what about Godzilla: Final Wars? Sure it's fun and groovy, but it's one mess of a film. What about Godzilla vs. Megaguirus? Could the characters in that be any worse? Godzilla vs. Gigan is pretty bad, though, again the fanbase is pretty split on it. It actually uses more stock footage than vs. Megalon! Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth is so mediocre it's actually forgettable.

I don't know... That list doesn't scream out to me as the worst of the worst. It just lists movies fans generally don't like because they veer away from the norm.

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla is the worst movie of the series.

I hate Godzilla vs Hedorah ONLY because of Hedorah. He is the worst Kaiju in my opinion. Walking polution that can fly, that has eyes? Ugh, so lame.

Yet I also agree with GMAN, Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla was pretty bad lol

Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla. I can't begin to list the many ways in which THAT film let me down - and that's saying quite a bit as I happen to be a die-hard fangirl! Hardly any continuity to speak of. Space Godzilla moved like he was about to give birth at any second (and still managed to wallop Godzilla a good one - at least for a little bit). Most of the humans were...lacking. Ugh. I gave myself a bloody headache.

I like Godzilla VS SpaceGodzilla. I think the worst is Godzilla's Revenge.

FOR SCIENCE OF COURSE!

Spacegodzilla is an aweful movie, even though I liked spacegodzilla himself. But Megalon, Gigan, and revenge are my least favorite. (Spacegodzill and Megagurias are not far behind) I agree with some statements above that Godzilla vs Hedorah is underrated, but still not in the top half of Godzilla movies (for me, at least). But hey, to each there own.

I can understand fans knee jerk reaction for Godzilla's Revenge to be listed as a least favorite. But I still contend it's a great story.

But like Something Real, I get a headache listing everything wrong with vs. SpaceGodzilla. I think I tried listing it once and realized I still wasn't hitting on all the problems in it...

Godzilla vs Hedorah is actually the only one I actually hate out of all the godzilla movies.

Godzilla's Revenge I don't mind too much, I enjoyed it as a kid as I got to see godzilla fights that I didn't have the moives for and even today i still enjoy a bit.

Son of Godzilla.... Can't comment on as it's the only Godzilla movie I haven't seen, could never find a copy of it in my town and now that I'm older I just haven't gotten around to it.

Godzilla vs Megalon, meh, I don't even really call it a godzilla movie, he barely in it and more a like cameo like in Zone fighter.

As for Spacegodzilla and Battle for Earth, yeah they're bad but not that bad. They both had some cool monster designs.

Didn't know Godzilla vs Megaguirus supposely bad, I enjoyed it greatly, scare me as a kid though.

Getting back to Godzilla vs Hedorah. The problem with it is that it had no idea what it wanted to be. One minute it's some strange documenty about space and it's connection with pollution. Then all of the sudden bang, skeletons, it's dark and creepy seeing these people die horribly then we're on to some weird music video from the 70s, then Godzilla shows up and it's kid's movie, yeah, he's beating up the bad monster and even flying!

No, just no, you can't have all of this different stuff, one minute kid's film then it's some cheap horror film. Why does this film even exist, to spread the message of to be good to nature? Godzilla already a walking message not to screw with nature! sigh, rant over.

AdminGodzillaMar-27-2014 11:22 AM

See? You either love or hate Godzilla vs. Hedorah. The fanbase just can't seem to agree on this one.

@MediaFreak

I think the reason Godzilla vs. Hedorah works is because all these strange elements mashed together are cohesive through the oddball tone of the movie. Right from the beginning there's this very strange personality to the movie-- it's almost experimental for the Godzilla series. It takes the campiness of Godzilla and uses it in a very cult/pop-art style that's either hypnotic or grating, depending on the audience member. I don't think it's one of the best films, but it is one of the more intersting movies in the series to watch.

I'll take a movie that is visually and stylistically different (Godzilla vs. Hedorah, Godzilla's Revenge), than a movie that just goes by the numbers with same'o, same'o styles. (Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla)

Revenge is the worst

Godzilla's Revenge is a fantastic allegory! I've a feeling most people whom disliked the film were looking for something a little more, hmmm, solid (?). Perhaps they felt that the premise of Godzilla and the beasts of Monster Island existing within the imagination of a young boy was too, well, childish. However, the story presents great moral values - not the least of which is "learn to stand up for yourself". The ONLY thing I can say that I enjoyed about Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla was the poster. When I first laid eyes upon that beauty, I had such high hopes for the film. It all collapsed when I finally sat down to watch it. And can you believe I dedicated two sodas, a bag of popcorn, and a box of Goobers to that miasma?! I never eat that poorly! Stupid bloody movie! The headache's back. Terrific

Godzillas Revenge by far is the inferior one because it uses so much stock footage from Son of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster. Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla isn't a masterpiece by any means, but at least it didn't use any footage from previous Godzilla movies.

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaMar-27-2014 11:50 AM

@Nightaries3030

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla used stock footage from Godzilla vs. Biollante for the naval battle. But there's more wrong with it than simply that. Godzilla's Revenge may have its technical failings, but it had a very, very strong script and an idea that was different from any Godzilla movie to come before it. Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, on the other hand, is a screenwriter's ultimate nightmare. Not to mention the worst effects in the Heisei series.

@Something Real

You pretty much nailed it. Ichiro is one of the most well developed characters in the Godzilla series and there in lies the problem: It's not a movie about Godzilla. It's a movie about a child during a depression. Ultimately, that's the most rooted reason why people dislike it. They wanted a typical Godzilla movie. Godzilla's Revenge is very far from a typical Godzilla film.

You know even if you hate SpaceGodzilla, atleast it didn't use stock footage with almost every monster fight like Revenge, Megalon, ext.

Son of godzilla is a masterpiece! The sheer tropical vibe and interesting story still keeps me glued to the screen. Godzilla's revenge is not that good but fun. revenge is a bit of an excotic movie to me because of the japanese culture in the film. Hedorah and Megalon are also fun to watch. Heck I love every godzilla movie! I keep watching these movies every now and then because of the great time and feelings I have towards these films.

Revenge had a terrible life lesson...

fight the bully who's twice as big as you.

spacgodzilla was good, along with megagiruirius.

I only didn't like revenge. And I was laughing the whole way through

Standing up for yourself and growing up is a bad life lesson? Must be the current generation's mindset.vs. Megaguirus isn't quite as bad as vs. SpaceGodzilla, but it's still pretty far at the bottom.

@GodzillaFan1995

Disagree there too. Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster was awesome.

Son of G was awesome besides that cheese ball music everytime minilla would show up, Hedorah I actually liked a lot until the final battle just dragged on and on, Revenge is a decent COMPILATION movie but one of my least favs, Megalon sucks.  Nothing is as bad as Space Godzilla though Mothra 1992 and Destroyah come close. I know I'm in the vast majority but I hate Destroyah. As for Sea Monster, it's actually probably in my top 5 of the whole series. LOVE IT

GMAN2887-

Interesting take. I don't agree with all your choices but it nevertheless is interesting. So to each his own. :)

I don't know if SpaceGodzilla is as awful as you say. Sure, its probably the weakest of the Heisei entries, but it came across to me more as a run-of-the-mill monster, more medicore than awful, maybe the producers were running out of ideas. At least they did sort of acknowledge their half-ass entry by making their follow-up the Destroyah movie, which in my opinion, is much more superior to SpaceGodzilla.

As for Godzilla's revenge, I don't know. I respect your view, but I think you over-analyze it too much. Yeah I will give credit to the producers for trying something different than the usual WWE-style monster bash, but in my humble opinion, it didn't quite work out. Coming of age story and standing up to bullies? Maybe that message was lost in translation. I just found the kid to be annoying as hell. And in the dream sequence, Minya was pretty stupid running up to Gabara who is twice his height. Even if you want to stand up to him, you could use a little more imagination and use your brain to defeat them if you can't match their sheer muscle power. And you could tell the produers were running low on money if they have to recycle so much stock sequence.

Son of Godzilla...well, yeah its gear toward families which that in itself isn't bad, but something seem to be missing from that film, I don't know. It just didn't work out for me. I  found Minilla to be dumb and Godzilla was just a nasty dad. Yeah the Big G came around in the end, but still, he is not a really a good example of a parent if you asked me.

Hedorah...yeah the fanbase most certainly is split on that. Whatever arthouse pretension the film was supposed to have, it just didn't work out to me. Again, maybe the message was lost in translation, the film just ended up as bizzare mess.

But still, I appreciate your analysis. I may not agree with some of your views, but I understand the depth of your analysis of these G flicks. :)

Godzilla's Revenge, is it even a debate? I mean sure SpaceGodzilla had its problems and was by no means a great film, but at least it was a film. Godzilla's revenge was just stock footage jumbled on top of what is borderline a story. Essentially it's the trials the kid goes through then BOOM Godzilla stock footage. The film didn't need to be made. It could have been a 30 minute afterschool special, but a 90 minute film? God no.

Minilla talks, and grows whenever the stock footage is needed(i still remember the horror I felt when I saw him in final wars and knew a scene like that was coming again) Godzilla looks different in every other shot. If you go from Seamonster and Son of Godzilla into this movie you're basically rewatching a movie with a different title.

Everything that some1 could criticize space Godzilla for isn't even applicable to this movie. Oh space Godzilla had bad effect. This movie didn't even have it's own effects, it runs off about 90% of the effects from the last movies. Space Godzilla had a lot of plots that went nowhere. Oh and the robbers in Godzilla's Revene mattered? Sure you could argue it showed the growth and how the kid wasn't scared but he literally escaped the robbers then went and fought the bully. So did the robbers need to happen? No, and if so then there never needed to be a new confrontation with the bully. The kid then goes and squeeks a bike horn causing some1 to fall down and pour paint on themselves, so good messsage Godzilla and Minilla teach a kid to stand up for himself to the point he becomes obnoxious. Not even a close call for me this movie is hardly that and takes the cake for worst

None of the movies listed in the topic are bad, in my opinion. :)

Now, my least favorite Godzilla film will probably be Godzilla:Final Wars. this movie was not an appropriate ending to the Toho Godzilla films. I understand why it has fans, bit I'm not one of them. I really don't like this movie. :/

I can't hate on Godzilla vs. Megalon or Godzilla's Revenge. I grew up with them. Like most of us, Godzilla vs. Megalon was my first Godzilla movie and got me hooked on him as a young boy. It's been 25+ years and still love it.

@GodzillaThe King123

I don't think anything in Godzilla's Revenge was lost in translation. I just think fans were too busy looking at the wrong things in this movie to see it. I'm only analyzing everything that Ishiro Honda was standing for during this time period and there's a pleathora of evidence to support it: Japan's depression. The fact Honda always said movies, "should be fun." The idea that he was starting to make more movies for/about kids...etc...

This is the director of the original Godzilla, afterall. He does everything with a sense of meaning and purpose, just like the original film. Godzilla's Revenge is no different in purpose, but it is a very different type. The dream sequences are nothing more than a visualizations of Ichiro's enternal struggles. Or eye candy.

Yes, Ichiro's stint into violence is a little jarring at the end. And yes there are technical failings, particularly with the stock footage, but fans like Dupr004 pretty much prove my point: People don't like Godzilla's Revenge because it wasn't really a Godzilla movie. There's a lot more going on with it and it has little to do with Godzilla.

Meanwhile, Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla has more wrong with it than I can list. But lets attempt the impossible anyway:

The idea of controlling Godzilla? What a great idea. Too bad it goes nowhere and is completely forgotten by the middle of the movie.

Yuki wanting revenge on Godzilla for his brother's death? Interesting. Too bad he never develops believably to be compelling.

SpaceGodzilla? Lets confuse the audience by overexplaining his origin with two possibilities, make a suit/design that can barely move and incorporate it in the most boring battle in the series for a 40 minute stretch where the main characters casually converse inside MOGUERA like they're not in danger of being shot.

Shoehorn a cute Baby Godzilla and Fairy Mothra just to appeal to the child and female demograph as well? Check.

How should it end? Well lets recycle Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla II's ending with the red Death Ray.

Mix that with the fact that Miki is given an elevated role that does nothing, (They build her up with Project-T, kidnapped her...etc... and for what? All she ended up doing was watch the battle. The Yuki rescue was the absolute worst payoff after all of that unnecessary drama.) a half-assed love story, (You can barely call it one.) and she received a thank you from the Cosmos for saving the world. Why? Godzilla and G-Force did all the work.

I should spend more time talking about how awful the astroid battle was, but, horrifyingly enough, that's actually one of the film's least concerns.

Godzilla's Revenge may have used an overabundance of stock footage, but everything in that stock footage was lightyears better than vs. SpaceGodzilla. Revenge had a consisant script and an endpoint where everything added up to develop Ichiro. Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla, on the other hand, barely holds itself together to be called a movie.

As for the others, I can understand Godzilla vs. Megalon, but I think Godzilla vs. Hedorah and Son of Godzilla have too many fans to generalize those as series lows. I'd put Final Wars, vs. Megaguirus, Godzilla and Mothra: Battle for Earth and maybe Godzilla vs. Gigan beneath the stack before I considered those two. (Although, arguably, vs. Gigan has the same number of split fans.)

Well, GMAN, I don't think we can agree on Godzilla's Revenge much, hehehe. I just don't buy that whole internal struggle/stand up to bullies point of the film.

SpaceGodzilla, again, I don't think its really that awful. If you want to talk about plotholes and poor characters, I think Hedorah and Megalon has tons more than Spacegodzilla. I will agree SpaceGodzilla as a design was pretty dull and uninteresting.

As for Megagurius and Mothra, I don't see anything so wrong with those films to be honest. I see them as fairly average Godzilla entries. Nothing spectacular or exceedingly poor about those flicks. Just forgettable standard entries, nothing more, nothing less.

I do agree Final Wars was a bit of a disappointment. The film was more interested in these dull human mutant soliders than Godzilla himself. And while there were some classic monster mash, it was all too brief.

Hedorah and Sons of Godzilla do have fans, but they also have many detractors, and I just don't appreciate it as much of some you here I guess.

That's all good, the world would be a boring place if there are no disagreements.

GODZILLATHEKING123 - I'm exceedingly pleased you've the maturity to debate without growing hostile and have the presence of mind to appreciate a good conversation. It's quite refreshing. That being said, I must stand firmly and state that Godzilla's Revenge did present a strong moral lesson. Why on Earth would they have even presented the boy's conflict if not to eventually have him respolve it - after having been given courage by his daydreams of Monster Island's inhabitants? Ichiro and Manilla are synonymous in the film - one in the same. Surely you can see that or at least acknowledge its implication? It's a pleasure conversing with you.
