This is just an opinion (yeah i'm expressing my opinion on the internet, God help me) post so please refrain from any hateful comments, and don't even bother reading if you are just going to hate me for it. . Also if this is a repeat, just let me know.

I've about had it with all the hate on the 1998 Godzilla movie. I didn't think it was that bad. I liked it from a movie standpoint, and i get that it shouldn't have been called Godzilla. But honestly, not everything is going to live up to our expectations. This isn't the blockbuster kaiju epic that we all thought it would be, but it wasn't a bad movie. I'll watch it any day, and I own it on DVD. It was no masterpiece, but it's entertaining.

I'm going all over the place here, so, basically, I liked it. I loved the creature effects and the whole destruction scale of it. It's a giant monster destroying New York city, what's not to love? I get all of you elitists saying we can't touch the original and anything other than TOHO is garbage, but that's taking it a bit too far. People make mistakes, but you can't just slam TriStar and Roland Emmerich for not having the same exact monster. Different monster, same name, still a good movie. It's already been made, and it's been 16 years. Just get over it.

Point is, 1998 wasn't that bad. And 2014 will be even better.

I didn't think it was that bad, but it isn't that good either. I like Zilla as his own monster, but the movie was just terrible.

I love Zilla, and I love the movie. Even though Ronald Emmrich had no idea who godzilla was, nor did he care about the film itself, I find it enjoyable and the monster interesting. :)

Count me in! :) As insulting as it was to the REAL Godzilla, its still a fun movie with a cool giant monster story, an awesome creature, and a wonderful sense of adventure!  I grew up with Zilla and his film, and I'll never hate it.

Well, it was nice knowing you all.  Its been a good ride...

Honestly I've seen worse Godzilla remakes purposed by supposed 'Hardcore fans'.

Does it say something about us as fans that we'll put up with any dumb storyline as long as they don't change the way Godzilla looks?

I mean can you say the story in 98 was nearly as bad as some of the heisei stories?

I'm actually suprised by how much support this movie is getting. Maybe they'll be a sequel after all. YEAH RIGHT:D

But seriously. It's a interesting monster, but it was burdened with a bad movie. Can someone agree with me when I say that the cartoon series that followed it wasn't that bad.

I hate the movie but I've seen worse and beside it's one of those movie you can watch with friends and make fun of it for what it is.

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-16-2014 8:42 PM

I don't get why people make so many discussions defending this movie... none of them seem to understand that we don't hate it because it necessarily a bad movie, but because it is called Godzilla despite not having Godzilla in it. Plus, even aside from that, it's got plenty of problems of its own (ripping off Jurassic Park, constant raining, bland and annoying characters, etc.). If the title was honest and called it something completely separate from Godzilla, I would still find it kind of okay at best and sub-par at worst.

Did we all hate on this movie because of what society thought of it? Is it because of peer pressure that we scorn this movie? It is decent. The monster is a good looking, interesting monster. But because it didn't do well in the box office, we all hated on it. Perhaps it's time to put that notion behind us and admit it is a decent movie to a degree.

Boy, I should paint a target on my head while I'm at it. I can sense that there will be some hate sent at me. Please be gentle, I'm sensitive. Not a quality often found in a man.

Not gonna lie, I like the movie, I have two Trendmasters Zilla figures on my shelf and the Ultimate Monster Edition of the movie on DVD.  I thought the look of Godzilla was interesting, Emmerich just didn't let him play the part.  It does have it's weak spots, like Godzilla's weakness involving dinky sidewinder missiles and his drgaon breath.  That being said, the cartoon was much MUCH closer to the character, that I liked very much, we can safely call that one Godzilla.

@KAIJUKINGGOJIRA Okay, I wasn't angry before, but seriously, accusing us of only pretending to dislike it because peer pressure!? That's just low.

@ KAIJUKINGGOJIRA

The movie actulaly did really well at the box office. It just had bad reviews. But yeah, it make like $380 million, on a budget of $130 million. Heavy marketing probably bumped the total cost to $200 million, but yeah, it was financial successful for sure.

As far as the quality of the movie:

I've mentioned this in several threads, but yeah, I too liked the 1998 movie. There are PLENTY of Toho Godzilla movies which are WORSE than the 1998 Godzilla.

I didn't like all the deviations from Godzilla's standard characteristics, but all of them still fell within the realm of 'creative license' imo. I didn't go into the movie expecting a carbon copy of Toho's monster, so I wasn't that disappointed by what I saw. I still would have preferred if they kept original traits, like the atomic breath, but it doesn't ruin the movie for me, as a monster movie OR a Godzilla film.

True American Godzilla

MemberMothra LarvaeMar-16-2014 10:14 PM

I personally liked the 1998 Godzilla film. Sure the American Zilla wasn't Godzilla, the cartoon counterpart achieved this much better (though why it's a guy when asexual reproduction basically clones the female adult I don't understand). Yes the US Military being portryed as stupid wasn't a smart play for the movie makers.

As a general monster movie it's fun and enjoyable. I was disappointed that it wasn't Godzilla, though this was America's 1st attempt at a "realistic" monster. It failed, which paved the way for the True American Godzilla coming this year.

Wow, I cannot believe the responses to this post! I thought for sure it was going to get a ton of hate, but as I read the comments, I find that almost everyone's opinion is pretty positive. That shocks me, to be honest.

@THE DESTROYER OF WORLDS

You were so brave to come and post your opinions here. You made it clear you expected hate for it, but you still came out and said what you wanted to say. I back that 100%.

So now, let me tell you what I think about the movie.

I loved it. I think Zilla's design is really cool, and I own the movie. I have the Trendmasters 'Living Godzilla' action figure along with the 'Combat Claw' figure. To be honest, he's one of my favorite monsters in the whole world. I didn't know people hated him so much at first (I'm about to be sixteen. I had owned the movie for years until my parents had a yardsale and I lost all my VHS movies. Therefore I hadn't seen the movie again until about one to two years ago, and I was completely unaware of all the hate for it). So when I got online and read the reviews, I was pretty surprised.

Seeing people hate on Zilla always saddens me to be honest. I like Final Wars, but the Zilla battle annoys me. I grew up watching this movie (being that I was born in 1998), and I loved it just as much as I loved the real Godzilla. I will always enjoy watching this movie.

I even continue to buy Zilla stuff that I find for cheap on ebay- I've been trying to build a bit of a collection.

Don't get me wrong, guys. I am a HUGE fan of the actual Godzilla. I always have been. But I like Zilla just as well, and no amount of hate is going to get me to think otherwise. I understand that he's not Godzilla. But that doesn't mean he's not a really cool monster.

So dude, I agree with you 100%!

@Everyone else:

Good job with your answers and not being hateful. I'm pleased to see that a lot of you actually do like Zilla like me and THE DESTROYER OF WORLDS. :)

You shouldnt be afraid of getting hate for liking the 98. Me on the other hand is most likely get it thrown in my face for what im about to say; Yes. Yes it was.

I dont like it, and its hated with good reason. And i really hate the "Oh its not that bad, it just shouldnt be called Godzilla" exscuse. Because newsflash, it doesnt change the fact the movie was called Godzilla.

But not being Godzilla is only one small flaw. This movie manage to get Matthew Broderick(An actor i highly respect) thrown down in the slums of boredom. And the rest of the actors arent even trying. And i couldnt get immersive in the story or characters. Even TOHO`s Godzilla movies managed that.

But the movie did have a few good things;

The Intro was omnious. The music also incredible. And the angle shots of Zilla had such potential(Him going past the window, him shown from above and him chasing the chopper had GREAT angles).

But beyond that, yes, the movie was horrible. If you want to like it, do so. I cant and wont stop you.

Well, I like the movie too, but the concept used for the monster was so far from the original Godzilla so it might be seen as a totally different creature than Big G to really enjoy the movie. But something I found in wiki indicates that maybe the approach that Roland Esmedrich used was Toho fault: the developers wanted to use the kaiju battle formula as we know in most of Godzilla movies; but Toho people forbade them to create another monster from their own, and if the new Godzilla was to battle it will be against another Toho creation like Mothra or King Ghidorah, the ones they offered for the deal.As you may guess, the budget was limited and the licenses over the other characters were outrageous high, so Roland and company needed to create a plan B. Indeed, the license cost is the main reason I highly doubt more Toho kaiju may appear in the upcoming film

I really liked the movie and zilla design. Sure they called it godzilla and for that it cops alot of critism but other than that it was a great movie. I thought the whole 'asexual' idea was different ,but a good different. The way they portrayed zilla being scare & confused was realistitic. The only thing i didn't like was the amount they underpowered zilla.

Surprised by all of the 1998 defenders. Which is a little refreshing actually - folks going against popular opinion. And I think it is a little silly how people still seem to be so personally offended by it so many years later. Time to get over it right?

But...while I respect everyones opinion, m gonna be that guy: In my opinion, Godzilla 1998 was an absolutely terrible movie.

Yes, I hated it when I saw it because I had been waiting a long time for a proper Americanized Godzilla flick - and this was what we got instead. But I went back and watched it recently and tried to judge it on its own merits, and it holds up even worse than I thought.

It all started with the script. It was just lazy: Terrible dialogue. Awkward forced humor. Vapid characters. Contrived plot points that make you groan. Large gaps between action (what little there was). And it just atraignt up stole ideas from much better films.  Frankly - the finished script feels like a first or second draft.

But it didnt stop there. The acting was bad to mediocre (probably the scripts fault to a certain extent, but everyone seemed to just be phoning it in). The action sequences were poorly shot-especially when godzilla first arrives (though ironically that was the only brief scene in the entire movie that made me feel I was watching a giant monster movie-as opposed to a chase flick)

It was also just plain ugly to look at. Whether it was done for aesthetic purposes or not, the picture often looks muddy and drab. The special effects are very hit and miss - while some scenes looked decent for the era in which it was made, at other times the sfx were outclassed by films made 5-10-15 years prior. The cgi used for the creature sometimes actually looks great...and then the next shot it looks like a cartoon. Very inconsistent.

Not actually being "Godzilla" aside -The creature itself was ok. Little to no personality unlike other memorable movie monsters, but I still think it deserved a better film.

But maybe my biggest complaint is that, when I watched it again for the first time since 1998, I was simply BORED! Not a lot actually happens, and what does doesnt really feel like it has a lot of weight. There is no tension, legit drama, or any scene that sticks out as being very memorable (atleast not for positive reasons). The story felt small.

Many of you compare the quality of the movie to the Hesei era real Godzilla films. The whole point of making 1998 was (or should have been) to bring Hollywood quality filmmaking to a great character that was always a little held back by budget, etc. It should have been MUCH better than the Hesei films because they had greater resources and talent pool. I hold hollywood films to a higher standard - this film didnt meet it.

Anyways, ill stop there. Im glad some of you actually liked it - cuz then that means it wasnt a total waste. But im a big fan of the entire giant monster movie genre - and I dont even own a copy of Godzilla 1998. That says something about just how much I didnt care for Zilla's first and only outing.

Thanks for reading haha.

Oh - and the Madison Square Garden part is one of the biggest fails in big budget action movie filmmaking ive ever seen. It encaptualizes every one of my above criticisms in one overlly long sequence.

I feel like this topic has been done to death. But the short answer is yes, it is really that bad. As a Godzilla film it's unrecognizable. As a Hollywood blockbuster it's a bottom feeder. There are so many incoherent elements that don't work to create anything unique or outstanding, but clash to make something visually boring and cinematically forgettable.

Even if there are technically "worse" films in the Godzilla series, (which if there are, it's a very short list) those films at least have more cinematic merit for their unique styles, strong directorial visions and persistant resourcefulness-- all of which are attributes that are completely absent in this movie.

This is all surprising, good on all of you for letting everyone know your real opinion. I'm a fan of the 1998 version also as this was my introduction to godzilla and the only one I saw for the first 6 years of my life (I'm 14).granted the creature did not resemble godzilla at all but the more agile and lean design was quite cool. I don't know...It just doesn't  deserve all the hate it gets but they are people's opinions so I respect them, they are entitled to them etc etc. thanks for reading...and happy st.patricks day ðŸ€ðŸ€ðŸ€ðŸ€

@Gman

Even though I agree with you completely-- I still stand by my opinion that most 'fan visions' of what Godzilla is-- are even further away from what Godzilla is/was than this film. At Godzilla's core, his very fundamental truth-- it is still a monster flick, regardless of whatever deep bs meaning people use to justify their fandom. I feel like too many fans try to 'dig deep with a toy shovel'.

But honestly, as far as Emmerich and Delvin's works go, its one of their better films. I find pretty much all their movies to be so painfully formula its disgusting.

Smart guy: Something bad is about to happen everybody! LISTEN!
